Overview & Configuration

Chapter Video: Oracle Philosophy & Setup

⏳ COMING SOON

Welcome to the first phase of our comprehensive Primavera P6 Mastery Course. Before diving into tasks and relationships, it is critical to understand what P6 is, how to navigate its interface, and how to configure it for your workflow.

1. What is Project Portfolio Management (PPM)?

Unlike standalone tools like MS Project, Primavera P6 is an Enterprise Project Portfolio Management (EPPM) system relying on a central database (Oracle or SQL) storing thousands of projects simultaneously.

FeatureStandalone (MS Project)Enterprise (P6)
Data StorageIndividual .mpp filesCentralized database
Resource PoolPer fileShared across all projects
Access ControlFile passwordsGranular user permissions & roles
💡 Why does this matter? Changes to Global data (Resources, Calendars) instantly affect every project in the database. Always distinguish between Global and Project-Specific data.

2. Navigating the P6 Interface

  • Directory Bar (Left): Jump between Projects, Resources, Reports, Tracking.
  • Menu Bar & Toolbars (Top): Schedule (F9) and Level Resources buttons.
  • Top Layout: Activity Table + Gantt Chart.
  • Bottom Layout (Activity Details): The powerful panel showing all details for the selected activity.
CRITICAL KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS: F9 Run Schedule
F5 Refresh Data
Insert Add new Activity/WBS
Ctrl + F Find

3. Customizing User Preferences

Go to Edit → User Preferences:

  1. Time Units: Units = "Hour", Durations = "Day", Show Decimals = 1-2.
  2. Dates: Format DD-MMM-YY, 4-digit year, check "Do not show time".
  3. Application: Startup window = "Activities".

4. Mastering Layouts (.plf)

A Layout saves your screen configuration: columns, filters, grouping, and Gantt chart colors.

  1. Add columns (Activity ID, Name, Duration, Start, Finish, Total Float).
  2. Apply filters (e.g., "Critical Activities Only").
  3. View → Layout → Save As... — Name it clearly.
  4. Export as .plf to share with colleagues.
